The Lions Biggest BBQ 2009
Barbeques Galore is proud to have supported the Lions Clubs of Australia in their annual fundraising initiative - Lions Biggest BBQ Weekend - to raise funds for the Children's Cancer Institute Australia (CCIA) for medical research into the causes and cures of childhood cancer. Many of the 1,400 Lions Clubs across the country participated in the Lions Biggest BBQ this year. To date, Lions Australia has raised over $2.2 million for CCIA through various fundraising activities such as the Lions Biggest BBQ Weekend.
The Children's Cancer Institute Australia is the only independent medical research institute in Australia solely devoted to research into the causes, prevention and cure of childhood cancer. In Australia more children die from cancer than any other disease. Over 500 new cases are diagnosed each year. One in 500 children will get cancer before their fifteenth birthday. Prior to the 1960s childhood cancer was practically a death sentence, with an overall cure rate of less than 5%. Today, as a result of enormous advances in medical research, the survival rate has risen to over 70%. However, three out of every ten children diagnosed with cancer do not survive. These are the children that the Institute is dedicated to saving.
